Holoportation - Going to next meeting virtually

Microsoft has been working on a special project that calls Holoportation- that has the potential to bring future a step closer to us. It utilizes the technology of AR and several cameras surrounding the users (on both end) to provide a real-time AR hologram image stream of each other.

The cameras are able to capture the movement and speech/audio of a person in one room and projects it in real-time through a Hololens so another user in a separate room can see and interact with them.

As shown in the picture to the right, it's a video captured from the point of view of user who's wearing the Hololens. The gentleman in white shirt and the girl are not in the same room of the user, the gentleman with gray shirt. However, the user was still able to see and talk to them through a virtual, but realistic hologram that updates in real-time.

In the near future, I expect Microsoft to overcome the current issues they are facing, such as limited movement area, dependency on network and possession of good cameras / Hololens. However, those are minor issues compares to what Holoportation can bring to the table.

Microsoft is bringing a whole new level to social interaction with "Holoportation". It can be the future of business meeting as it is very feasible for business corporations to be able to afford a healthy network bandwidth, along with several cameras. Being able to communicate with each other face to face is going to be much easier for one to visually demonstrate or give a presentation to the other side. Also, it'd be a tremendous for hospitals to get a better view of their patients in order to get an accurate diagnosis.

Since interactions are recorded via cameras, it can be replayed on a shrunk scale or manipulated holograms, giving the users to experience to relive the moment. The feature of being able to relive past moments are huge as it can become the next VBlog and/or memory recording. I know a lot of people get very excited to video chat with their loved ones living in remote parts of the world. And elderly people often feel very isolated living alone. This has potential to make that interaction easier, more intimate & fulfilling

Couple potential issues that I see could be problematic now in Hololens are that the user is limited to only a small area that is within the range of the cameras. Also, it is very dependent on the network that the connection carries through,              Another thing to note is that during the recording of the video posted by Microsoft, the little was not wearing a Hololens. She almost walked through the user current hologram position, which would freak some people to a certain degree.
