iStaging Review

For this review, I used the AR app called 'iStaging' by IKEA that has all the tools to design your interior easily, right from your iPhone or iPad. It uses the augmented reality (AR) technology that let you view how your room would look like with your desired furniture in whichever position you want.

As you can see from the picture to the right, I took a picture of a room I was in with a table placed near the brainstorming area of CS Lounge.

I picked a commonly seen piece of furniture to place into this room. It would seem appropriate to see a long table next to several chairs and a smaller set of tables.  I was able to adjust its size and its location by dragging the augmented image around the camera. This takes place in real-time and wasn't Photo-shopped in onto the image.

I can see how practical this app is for people that want to redesign their homes, or to envision how fitting their furniture would be inside their rooms. However, unfortunately, the app would not let users add multiple furniture pieces at a time, rather than just having one piece. With a few improvements, this app can be very useful in the future. It can let architectures visualize how the projects they are building would look like finished, or help home designers pre-arrange furniture prior to buying them. Maybe with a bigger and better camera, instead of having AR images of furniture, app can use its technology to store AR images of traffic light, street signs , building for city building purposes, or even build a whole park in AR

As I got curious when playing around with iStaging app, I picked a piece of furniture- in this case, a bed, to place in a setting where you would not see them normally. In the image to the left, a picture of a comfy, memory foam bed is oddly placed on the hallway in front of WICS lounge in my university.

It seems inappropriate for such a piece of furniture to even be inside this environment. people would be taking naps in-between classes (maybe it's not such a bad idea? ). This shows what you can do with this app,
